Denta vs. direct reimbursement: why add the product?
Denta uses direct reimbursement and adds agreed rates at participating dentists, a card and an employee payment experience.

Denta uses direct reimbursement. The comparison is Denta versus arranging reimbursement yourself or through another provider. The reason to choose Denta is the product around it: in-network rates at participating dentists, the Denta Card and a clear route from benefit to payment.
Sending money back to an employee can cover an expense. It does not, on its own, secure a dentist’s rate or create the whole benefit experience.
What direct reimbursement means
The ADA’s dental glossary describes direct reimbursement as an employer-funded approach based on dental spending. That defines the funding mechanism, not the software, payment method or network someone must use.
What you would need to arrange
| Part of the benefit | Denta | Reimbursement you arrange separately |
|---|---|---|
| Money for care | Employer funds eligible treatment | Employer funds eligible treatment |
| Dentist rates | Agreed Denta rates at participating practices | Negotiate, buy access or pay the applicable practice price |
| Payment experience | Denta Card and the applicable payment/reimbursement process | Decide whether employees pay first and how reimbursement works |
| Benefit administration | Denta product supports enrollment, benefit use and payment | Assign the workflow to staff or another provider |
| Cost | Membership, care and 5% transaction fee | Care plus any network, processing, staffing and administration costs |
An alternative provider may offer a network or card too. Compare what is actually included, not just the word “reimbursement.”
The rate can change what the benefit buys
Suppose an eligible treatment is $200 at the practice’s regular price and $150 at its agreed Denta rate. The treatment uses $150 of the employee’s benefit, and Denta’s transaction fee on that care is $7.50. Membership is separate.
Those are hypothetical prices. They illustrate why the rate belongs in the comparison alongside the reimbursement process. Compare actual practice prices before calculating savings.
Paying an expense is not the whole setup
Eligibility, records, benefit terms and tax treatment still need a proper arrangement. Do not assume that a receipt and a transfer create one automatically. The IRS employer fringe-benefit guide explains the conditions and exceptions around employer health benefits.
Denta provides the product; the company still funds and sponsors its benefit. Another provider should be equally clear about the responsibilities it takes on.
When to use Denta
Choose Denta when you want direct reimbursement and participating rates together in an employee-facing product. Arranging the parts separately may fit if you already have the network and administrative capabilities you need.
Use the setup checklist to compare the work involved, then the cost examples to compare the full expense.
