How to set up dental insurance for a startup

A step-by-step launch checklist for a first employee dental plan.

To set up dental insurance for a startup, define who is eligible, what the company will contribute, and which services matter. Then compare actual policies, enroll employees, and give them a clear guide to using the benefit.

A practical launch sequence

  1. Count eligible employees and note where they live and work.
  2. Set a monthly employer budget and decide whether dependents are included.
  3. Request policies with the same effective date and census.
  4. Compare premiums, networks, deductibles, annual maximums, waiting periods, and exclusions.
  5. Confirm enrollment deadlines and give employees a plain-language summary.

Small employers can review SHOP eligibility, but not every employer or location has the same options. HealthCare.gov explains who qualifies for SHOP. Its SHOP dental page notes that dental may be included with some health plans or purchased separately.

Test what employees will encounter

Before signing, ask each carrier to walk through a cleaning and a crown using the proposed policy. Confirm whether the sample dentist is in network and when any waiting period ends. The ADA describes how networks and plan types differ.

Share the effective date, member instructions, claim contact, and a link to the full plan document. Our five-question comparison checklist is a useful final review before enrollment.
