A focused checklist for comparing insured dental plans without relying on a generic ranking.

The best dental insurance for a startup depends on the dentists employees can see, the treatment the policy pays for, and the total premium and out-of-pocket cost. A national “best” ranking cannot answer those questions for your team.

Compare policies on the same page

For each quote, record the employer and employee premium, deductible, preventive coverage, coverage percentages for basic and major care, annual maximum, waiting periods, and exclusions. Ask whether the maximum is per person and when it resets. The ADA explains how plan maximums and other limitations work.

Eligible small employers may be able to buy dental coverage through SHOP, either with or separately from SHOP health coverage. HealthCare.gov lists SHOP eligibility rules and explains its dental options. Availability varies by location, so compare actual plans where your employees work.
