Best dental benefits for startups: a practical way to choose
Compare funding, coverage, and employee experience before you choose a plan.

The best dental benefit for a startup is the one employees can use and the company can fund with confidence. Start with the care you want to cover, then compare funding models and total costs. A plan with the lowest quoted monthly price may still leave employees with high bills.
Decide what the benefit should do
Write down three priorities: access to employees' dentists, predictable employer spending, and how much routine and larger treatment the plan should cover. Ask employees which dentists they use, but avoid promising that a provider participates until you verify the actual plan network.
Compare the main approaches
| Approach | Employer pays | Main question |
|---|---|---|
| Fully insured dental | Premiums | Which claims does the policy cover? |
| Self-funded dental | Covered claims and administration | How will claims vary, and who administers them? |
| Discount program | Program cost; employees pay for treatment | Is this enough help with care costs? |
The ADA distinguishes insurance, self-funded arrangements, and discount plans. A discount plan is not insurance. For the funding distinction, see our self-funded dental explainer.
Compare the employee experience
Request a sample for a cleaning, a filling, and a larger procedure. Look at the deductible, annual maximum, waiting period, exclusions, network status, and what the employee pays. The ADA notes that annual maximums and fee schedules can materially affect a claim.
Denta administers self-funded dental benefits, so we have an interest in that model. It will not fit every startup. Ask each provider for the same written cost and coverage scenarios before choosing.
