Denta vs. Cigna dental: know what is covered and what is discounted
Compare Denta with Cigna dental options by separating treatment funding, network pricing and employee costs.

Denta combines two things: direct reimbursement for eligible dental care and in-network rates at participating dentists. Cigna offers several dental products with different coverage and access rules. In either case, separate the price of treatment from the amount the benefit pays.
A discount makes care cheaper. Coverage or employer funding helps pay for it. The two are not interchangeable.
Identify the Cigna product first
Cigna’s employer dental guide lists DPPO, Dental Care DHMO, DEPO and traditional indemnity-style options. It also distinguishes discount programs from insurance. Its DPPO allows dentist choice with network savings; DEPO generally focuses on in-network coverage, while DHMO rules depend on the state and benefit schedule.
A comparison with one Cigna product is not a comparison with all of them.
Follow the treatment bill
| Question | Denta | Cigna proposal |
|---|---|---|
| What sets the treatment price? | Agreed Denta rate at participating dentists for applicable services | Selected network and product rules |
| Who funds the benefit? | The employer | Confirm the proposal’s funding arrangement |
| What does the employee receive? | Eligible care paid up to the available benefit under plan terms | The specific coverage or discount described in the proposal |
| What is the access check? | Dentist participation, eligible service and available benefit | Exact network, out-of-network terms and any referral requirements |
The Cigna distinctions come from its employer guide. Request the documents for the option actually offered to your company.
Do not assume implants are excluded everywhere
Cigna lists implant-related benefits among options in its Dental Care description, subject to the applicable schedule and restrictions. A claim that all dental insurance excludes implants would give you the wrong comparison.
For any expected major treatment, ask both options about eligibility, benefit remaining and the actual employee payment. A covered procedure can still leave a meaningful bill.
Why Denta is different
Denta starts with employer money for eligible care and an agreed rate at participating dentists. The Denta Card brings the benefit into the payment experience. Membership and the 5% transaction fee are separate from the care funded.
That is a clear proposition for an employer that wants to pay for treatment directly. It also means employer spending varies with care use, within the benefit terms. Include a higher-use year in your budget.
Make the choice on the actual benefit
Choose Denta if you want its direct-reimbursement experience and participating rates. A Cigna option may fit better if its specific network, covered services or funding design suits your team.
Use Denta vs. dental discount plans if you are comparing network access alone. Use the employer cost guide when both proposals include money for care.
