Dental benefits for small business employees
What employees need to know to actually use a new dental benefit.

A dental benefit helps employees only when they know where to go, what is covered, and what they may owe. A simple one-page explanation can matter as much as the plan announcement.
Explain the first visit
Tell employees when coverage starts, how to find a participating dentist, whether they need a card, and whom to contact about a claim. Explain that a dentist's treatment recommendation and a plan's payment decision are different things. The ADA describes how plan allowances and out-of-network charges affect the patient bill.
Explain the limits before care
Employees should be able to find the deductible, annual maximum, waiting periods, and exclusions without hunting through a long booklet. The ADA notes that many plans have annual payment maximums. For larger treatment, encourage employees to ask the dental office and plan for a cost estimate before care.
Keep an answer path open
Give employees a single support contact and the current plan document. If a claim is denied, the document should explain how to ask for a review. The Department of Labor explains the role of the Summary Plan Description and claims procedures for covered workplace plans.
If you are choosing the benefit now, start with what dental plans cost employers, then draft the employee guide before launch.
